Friday "Wrap Up"

This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss Week with a bunch of activities throughout the week.  We had a Dr. Seuss photo booth set up in the library for kids, teachers and classes to take pictures when they were here for checkout.

We also had a "Dress like a Dr. Seuss Character" day.  It always amazes me at how creative some parents are because I do not have that talent.  I just love seeing how the kids come to school.  

One of our dress up days was "Twin Day".  I love that the teachers even get involved in this one.  

We also had a "Dr. Seuss Read Around the School". Teachers picked Dr. Seuss books to read and the student traveled to 3 different books with their reading buddies.  This is a clip from our PE and Science teachers really getting into the spirit of I Wish That I Had Duck Feet.

Friday "Wrap Up"

Kinder kids are so funny.  I read the book Early Bird by Tony Euly to kinder this week.  It is a cute story about a bird that gets up early and goes on a journey to the garden to get the early worm.  It has good position word usage like over, under, across and through.  While I was reading to the first class of kinder students I asked them what the opposite of early was.  The first student I called on said, "You know, like early in the morning."  I said, "That is what early means, but what is the opposite?".  The next student I called on said, "Like before breakfast."  I again said yes and that the opposite of early was late.  

The next kinder class I had decided to start with "What does early mean?" and about 4 of them shouted out "Late!"

Friday "Wrap Up"

We wrapped up our 2nd round of makerspace this week and I must say, finger knitting by far was the biggest hit. What was most fun was seeing kids the faces of the kids I didn't think would have the patience to learn the process end up making a necklace or bracelet they were so proud of. I wish I had taken more pictures.  This is one of my 4th graders who went home and created 4 necklaces after being in the makerspace.

- 5 kinder Storytimes with Rubia and the Three Osos (including one hilarious story time with our ESL kinder class who definitely knew more Spanish than me)

Friday "Wrap Up"

Whew!  These last 2 weeks have been crazy!

I have been doing all day research with 3rd grade classes which has taken up these two weeks.  They spend the whole day except for lunch, recess and PE. Each class researches a Force of Nature... hurricane, tornadoes, volcanoes, wildfires, avalanches, and earthquakes.  Then we make a graphic novel on the iPads with the students as characters.  This project smashes 4 different apps together to create the graphic novel so it is a pretty involved procedure, but the kids are so excited when we finish.  

This week

- 4 days all day research

- 2 sessions of 4th grade Battle of the Book Introduction

- Attended library professional development

- Worked on a badge project for teachers

-5 kinder storytimes

Friday "Wrap Up"

It was early dismissal this week for parent-teacher conferences.  I typically don't schedule my regular 1st and 2nd grade lessons this week because the schedules are so screwy and it gives me a chance to do some special lessons or work on projects if I need to.  One of those projects was to rearrange the space where I was holding makerspace.  My original space was not big enough and did not flow right for me.  When our director came we talked about shifting my fiction section and using that space.  So I did.  

This was originally where I was going to have my makerspace.  It just wasn't working right. 

So I rearranged my fiction area so that the makerspace was near the tables in my teaching area and there is lots of floor space for those that like to spread out.

I put three genres on the shelves on the wall so have a clear space so I could see into the area.  I tuned two of the now empty shelves on the side to put the materials on.  This is much more functional now.

We are having a massive rainstorm in San Antonio today, so besides almost having to swim to work today, we have had a lot going on this week.  Our library has been filled with storybook characters for our literacy pumpkin patch.

On Monday I started my makerspace.  You can read about that here .

I am really pleased with how it went this week.  It was fascinating to see the kids thought processes as they tried to build.  I pleasantly surprised to see that each day, girl teams were the ones that were able to make the tallest tower out of pipe cleaners.

And my nails... GLOW IN THE DARK!! How cool is that.  At our Jamberry Summit last weekend, they announced the glow in the dark wraps and gave us each a sheet.  I couldn't wait to get home and try them.  On that same day, my Tru Shine Gel Kit came so of course I had to try that to. So here is my Glowing Ghouls Wraps with a Black Cherry Gel accent nail (don't judge the painting of the nail, just look at the pretty color and smooth, shiny finish ;)) 

And here are my wraps at night.  They totally freaked me out the first night I had them on because I forgot about them.  I turned off my bedside light and went to scratch my nose and almost had a heart attack.

Can you believe it is already October and 6 weeks of school have gone by?  We are supposed to be having a "cold front" in San Antonio this weekend (meaning our temperatures will be in the 80s during the day instead of the mid 90s, but I'll take it!).

- Attended a library Professional Development

- Attended a library transformation planning meeting

- Held our 2nd newspaper club meeting

TGIF is all I have to say! Why does it always seem like 4 day weeks are longer than a regular week? Whew. 

This week I started my every other week lessons with 1st and 2nd grade and started seeing kinder. 

- 3 Second grade lessons on choosing a "just right" book

- 6 First grade lessons (read Wild About Books and made a class book)

- attended 2 after school library meetings

- met with the other teachers I am sponsoring an online newspaper club with

- 6 kinder lessons and checkouts

- attended my 7th grade son's Meet the Teachers" night

Posting this on Saturday because Friday I was busy taking care of my 3 year old nephew while my brother and sister-in-law were still in the hospital with their new born.  He won't pose for pictures very often, but luckily she doesn't have a choice.

Friday "Wrap" Up

This is the last Friday of the school year!  While I can't believe this school year is over, it seems like these last two weeks will never end.  But the end is in sight.  

Besides hounding kids to turn in or pay for their books, we have actually been pretty busy.  

-3rd grade Battle of the books

-hosted a former student turned author, Megan Padalecki, for 1st and 2nd grade.  She has written, illustrated and self-published a book called Big Mo.  A story about an iguana who grows too large and threatens his environment.  

- I also met with our district battle of the books planning committee to debrief our battle from last Thursday.  

- We have also been changing all our genrification stickers to colored labels over the call number so that has been a lot of peeling and degunking with Goo Gone.

Wimberley Fundraiser

I am so saddened by the pictures and stories coming out of Wimberley from the floods this weekend.  I have seen many posts on social media of people in central Texas sending supplies and manpower to Wimberley to help search for missing people and clean up the destruction from the floods.  I wanted to do something too.  So I have decided to donate 30% of all purchases from my Jamberry website from now until Sunday night to the Red Cross to help with aid.

This can be any items from the website - wraps, gift certificates, nail care products, Style Box subscriptions, application tools, hand care products... anything.  Think of gifts you need for birthdays, graduations, summer fun, even the holidays in December (get shopping done early and help a great cause at the same time).  Remember wraps (excluding college and sorority) are always Buy 3 Get 1 Free.  

Please help me help those in Wimberley who have been affected by these recent storms.  

Friday "Wrap" Up

This week was spent with 4th grade doing research.  Each of the 7 classes came in everyday to research a topic of the student's choice (a modified genius hour).  I definitely want to change it up if I do it again, even though they were very engaged because it was a topic of their choice.  The structure of the research time is what I need to rethink.

It's Pedicure Season

After being at baseball games all weekend, I realized it is pedicure season and not everyone is aware of that.  This video floating around social media hits the nail on the head

Friday "Wrap" Up

This is a short week for schools here in San Antonio due to our Fiesta celebration.  We are off today for the huge Battle of Flowers Parade downtown.  Besides giving STAAR for 3 days - blech!  We actually did get some poetry stations done with 4th grade for our upcoming visit from Poetry Alive.  I also moderated a twitter chat for my district librarians about things they brought back from TLA. And I participated in our district chat about education where each question (and some answers) were introduced with memes.  You can read about that chat on @Terrieichholz blog post .

My wraps this week are in honor of Fiesta time in San Antonio.... Lotus , the June Hostess Exclusive and Skinny Pink (I am not usually a "pink girl", but after having it on last week I LOVE it!

I have nothing to do with the first grade Fiesta parade that goes on at our school, but I just love how the whole school dresses up and lines the hallways.
